SPORT
Sports that are offered at the school are:
- Athletics
- Goal ball
- Blind cricket.
Braille Chess:
Pioneer School has a chess club whose members have played against local schools, as well as in a national tournament prior to the Covid-pandemic. The club meets weekly for friendly games and coaching. Chess has been adapted for persons with visual impairment and is called braille chess, not blind chess. The chess boards and pieces are adapted so that the different pieces are easily recognised by physical features and some of the rules are adapted as well.
Swimming lessons through Crazy Splash:
The Crazy Splash Swim School offers Pioneer School the wonderful opportunity for a certain number of learners to attend weekly swimming lessons in their heated swimming pool throughout the year. At this stage the learners that make up the group are the Gr R and Gr 1 classes, as well as a group of high school learners that are coached at the gym.
Swimming is one of the best sports for visually impaired learners – apart from being a valuable sensory-motor experience, it is good for physical health, strength and fitness, and can be a lifelong sport. The fact that these learners can continue with lessons throughout the year (summer and winter) means that they continue developing and strengthening their skills, as opposed to stopping for a number of months and having to re-learn skills and regain fitness.
Sportsoorte wat aangebied word, is:
- Atletiek
- Doelbal
- Blinde krieket.
Braille Skaak:
