The learners are exposed to the following:

  1. Holistic Approach: The learners’ academic, social, emotional, spiritual, physical, medical, socio-economical, self care are met in a nurturing environment.
  2. Self care: A self care program is followed during which the learners are exposed to activities of daily living, ranging from eating with a knife and fork, grooming (brushing teeth, washing, etc.) to using a ATM and shopping.
  3. Social Skills: The goal is to enable each learner to fulfill his/her potential and to be a responsible member of society.
  4. Functional Scholastic Work: Literacy, Numeracy and Life Orientation is the main focus.
  5. Handwork: The learners are exposed to a variety of handwork activities according to their level of functioning.
  6. Home Economics: Basic skills are taught e.g. spreading of bread, making coffee and preparing a simple meal.
  7. Vocational Skills: Basic rules of good conduct e.g. punctuality, proper form of clothing, respect, work ethics are taught.
  8. Sheltered Workshops: Learners in their final year are given the opportunity to gain work experience by attending sheltered employment two days a week.
  9. Alternative Communication: Learners who are deafblind communicate by means of finger spelling and signing. Learners with physical difficulties can do their work on the computer, or their work is transcribed (amanuensis).
  10. Vocational Training: The Institute for the Blind caters for the needs of the adult visually impaired person. Further education, training, medical care, employment and accommodation are provided in a sheltered environment.

During their last year of school attendance, the visually impaired learners from this section for the multiple disabled, twice weekly attend different workshops at the Industries. They acquire skills in weaving, mattress making, woodwork, cane weaving and packaging. Learners unable to advance in any particular skill, join the therapeutic group. At the age of 18 they are employed in the sheltered workshop environment at the Institute for the Blind, Worcester. www.blind-institute.org.za

Die leerders word aan die volgende blootgestel:

  1. Holistiese benadering: Die leerder se akademiese, maatskaplike, emosionele, geestelike, fisiese, mediese, sosio-ekonomiese en selfsorgbehoeftes word in ‘n geborge omgewing aangespreek.
  2. Selfsorg: ‘n Selfsorgprogram word gevolg waartydens die leerders aan daaglikse lewensaktiwiteite blootgestel word wat wissel van eet met ‘n mes en vurk en versorging (tande borsel, bad, ens.) tot die gebruik van ‘n OTM en inkopies doen.
  3. Sosiale vaardigehede: Die doel is om elke leerder te help om sy/haar potensiaal te verwesenlik en ‘n verantwoordelike lid van die samelewing te wees.
  4. Funksionele skolastiese werk: Geletterdheid, Gesyferdheid en Lewensoriëntering is die hooffokus.
  5. Handwerk: Die leerders word aan ‘n verskeidenheid handwerk-aktiwiteite blootgestel volgens hul funksioneringsvlak.
  6. Huishoudkunde: Basiese vaardighede word aangeleer, bv. smeer van brood, koffie maak en om ‘n eenvoudige maaltyd te berei.
  7. Beroepsvaardighede: Basiese reëls van professionele gedrag, bv. stiptelikheid, korrekte kleredrag, respek en werksetiek word aangeleer.
  8. Beskutte arbeid: In hul finale jaar kry leerders die geleentheid om werkservaring op te doen deur twee dae per week beskutte arbeid te verrig.
  9. Alternatiewe kommunikasie: Doofblinde leerders kommunikeer deur middel van vingerspelling en gebaretaal. Leerders met fisiese gestremdhede kan hul werk op die rekenaar doen of dit word getranskribeer (amanuensis).
  10. Beroepsopleiding: Die Instituut vir Blindes voorsien in die behoeftes van die volwassse visueelgestremde persoon. Verdere opvoeding, opleiding, mediese sorg, werkverskaffing en akkommodasie word voorsien in ‘n beskutte omgewing.

In hul laaste jaar van skoolbywoning woon die visueelgestremde leerders van die afdeling vir meervoudiggestremdes tweemaal per week verskillende werkswinkels van Nywerhede by. Hulle leer vaardighede in weefwerk, matrasvervaardiging, houtwerk, rottangwerk en verpakking aan. Leerders wat geen spesifieke vaardighede toon nie, sluit by die terapeutiese groep aan. Wanneer hulle die ouderdom van 18 bereik, word hulle in diens geneem in ‘n beskutte arbeidsomgewing by die Instituut vir Blindes in Worcester.  www.blind-institute.org.za
